Cowboys crunch Packers in battle of unbeatens
The Dallas Cowboys leaned on their defense and running game - then unleashed little-known wide receiver Miles Austin to put away a 27-16 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night.

Celizic: Cowboys on top of their game and NFL
Celizic: After three weeks of the NFL season, there are six teams that remain undefeated, but only one that looks as if it could stay that way for a while. I probably don’t have to say that team is the Dallas Cowboys.

Raiders reportedly ready to fire Kiffin … again
Just like last week, this could be Lane Kiffin’s final week with the Oakland Raiders. Raiders owner Al Davis plans to fire Kiffin as soon as Monday, FoxSports.com and ESPN reported.

A Stadium farewell, but Yankees stay alive
After all those championships in this celebrated place, all those unforgettable moments, the New York Yankees weren’t about to be knocked out of the playoff race on a night like this. Mariano Rivera finished what Babe Ruth started 85 years ago, and New York bid farewell to fabled Yankee Stadium with a 7-3 victory Sunday.

U.S. romps to Ryder Cup victory
Strong as a team, strong as individuals, the Americans rode the emotion of a flag-waving crowd and its two Kentucky players on Sunday to win the Ryder Cup for the first time since 1999.

Opinion: There’s no substitute for inexperience
Opinion: In the weeks ahead, these events that took place at Valhalla, the lessons learned at the 37th Ryder Cup, will be analyzed, glamorized and traumatized. But we don’t need to wait weeks to establish the most profound thing we learned from Team USA’s 16B=-11B= victory. In short, there is no substitution for inexperience.

Scobee, Jaguars boot Colts in final seconds
Josh Scobee proved Jacksonville’s traditional formula still works. After wearing out the Indy defense on the ground, Scobee saved the game - and perhaps the season - by making a 51-yard field goal with 4 seconds left to give the Jaguars a 23-21 victory, their first in Indy since 2004.

Broncos sweat out another shootout, top Saints
Martin Gramatica’s 43-yard field goal try with 1:55 remaining was wide right, and the Denver Broncos escaped with a 34-32 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Swarming defense lifts Eagles over Steelers
Brian Westbrook limped off the field in the first half. Donovan McNabb missed part of the third quarter. With their best player sidelined and star quarterback hurting, the Philadelphia Eagles did it with defense.

Curran: Angry Eagles deliver ‘butt-kicking’ to Steelers
Curran: The Philadelphia Eagles defense b?” shamed by the Dallas Cowboys in a 41-37 loss earlier in the week b?” took out their embarrassment on the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 15-6 beatdown Sunday.

Rogers, Dalhausser claim another titleDominant duo keeps on rolling in Manhattan BeachBy Lara Boyko / AVP.com

MANHATTAN
BEACH, Calif. — On September 21, 1983, a special event took place for
the first time on the south side of the Manhattan Beach. Twenty-five
years later to the day, the tradition of that special event continued
as No. 1 seed Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers defeated No. 3 seed Nick
Lucena and Sean Scott to claim their fourth Manhattan Beach Open title
and get their name on the pier. “There’s some illustrious company
up there,” said Rogers on being only the fourth team after Mike
O’Hara/Mike Bright, Mike Dodd/Tim Hovland and Karch Kiraly/Kent Steffes
to have three in a row Manhattan Beach titles. “If you know your
history of volleyball, those are the names on the beach.”
Capping off their history-making year that included a gold medal at the
Beijing Olympics, Dalhausser and Rogers used consistency and confidence
to break through a 4-4 tie in the first set of the finals. “I
thought we played well the first game, but Phil made some good moves on
blocking by blocking Sean three times in a row,” said Lucena. “They got
a couple of points and blew through the first game.” After
breaking through that tie, Dalhausser and Rogers never looked back as
they went on a 3-1 run before the first time out at 7-5 and then 7-5
run before the second time out at 14-10 that proved to be too much of a
deficit to overcome. “I tried to set Sean a little bit more at
the net, but they are the No. 1 team right now and you have to play
perfect against them,” said Lucena. We had to play a lot of matches
before we got to them and just ran out of gas.” The toughest
semifinal matches of the day involved Lucena and Scott, who narrowly
defeated the No. 6 seed of Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings 18-21,
21-19 and 15-12 in an hour and 14 minutes. “That was a big
match, and I didn’t think we were going to win that one,” said Lucena.
“I think in the end it definitely did take stuff out of us, but I was
glad to get the win. Set two of the final match was also
controlled by Dalhausser and Rogers, who used some momentum from one of
Scott’s kills going off a Dalhausser block and Lucena delivering a long
kill that gave the No. 1 team the go-ahead point from a 4-4 tie.
Despite this being their sixth championship match, Lucena and Scott
seemed to run out of steam and hit a couple of costly hitting errors
that increased the lead for the No. 1 seed in set two. “They
are really confident and don’t make a lot of mistakes,” said Lucena.
“They are the No. 1 team right now and there is no one else out there
like Phil right now. [Brad] Keenan has pretty good hands, but on
transition Phil gives you such a great set and that’s something we
didn’t take advantage of. Our transition sets were off this game.”
Yet no matter how much Lucena and Scott tried to fight back against
“The Thin Beast” and “The Professor,” a deficit that reached to as many
as six points in the second and helped give Dalhausser and Rogers their
final tournament victory of the season and their 11th AVP title for the
2008. With Olympic, AVP and FIVB victories in 2008 behind them, they
are now like other players on the AVP tour — looking forward to the
off season. “I am going to do a whole lot of nothing,” said
Dalhausser. “Baseball playoffs are coming up and I’ll get to sit down
and watch them along with NASCAR.”

Cardinal Tops No. 19 Cal Poly To Conclude Preseason

Stanford will begin its Pac-10 schedule next Friday against Oregon State at Maples Pavilion.

Behind an extraordinary effort by senior outside hitter Cynthia Barboza, the Stanford women?s volleyball team concluded the preseason on the right note, besting No. 19 Cal Poly (5-6) on its home floor, 25-17, 23-25, 26-24, 25-10. Stanford (9-2) finished the Mission Inn at Pismo Beach Invitational with a sweep of the competition, and picked up its fifth straight win.. The Cardinal begins the conference season on Friday night, meeting Oregon State at Maples Pavilion.

Barboza led all players with a season-high 20 kills, hit a season-best .474 and added 14 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. The senior also delivered three blocks and tacked on two service aces. Senior Foluke Akinradewo was also in double-figures with 10 kills on 16 swings (.625) and turned in a season-high seven blocks.

Cal Poly was led by Kylie Atherstone?s 17 kills and .237 hitting percentage. The Cardinal outhit the Mustangs, .331 to .094, marking the fifth consecutive match that it has held an opponent under .200.

Cal Poly took a 2-0 lead in the opening set, and the set went into four ties before Stanford finally took a lead on a Mustang attacking error at 8-7. Cal Poly scored four straight points from there, scoring on a Stanford service error, two Cardinal hitting errors and an ace. Stanford bounced back, however, won the set a few points later when junior Joanna Evans served six straight points and the Mustangs made four hitting errors. After a Cardinal service error, sophomore Alix Klineman followed Evans? run by serving five straight points of her own. In the combined 11-1 run, Cal Poly made six hitting errors and Akinradewo pounded three kills, giving Stanford a comfortable 21-13 lead. The Cardinal took set point on a Cassidy Lichtman kill a few points later, and won on Cal Poly?s 13th hitting error of the set, 25-17.

Stanford was on the right track in the second set, but a series of uncharacteristic reception problems wreaked havoc on the Cardinal momentum. Caitlin Smith served five consecutive aces, giving her team a 10-5 lead. Atherstone added to the momentum, downing two kills to help the Mustangs build the lead to as much as seven at 13-6. The Cardinal bounced back, however, scoring points in threes to pull back into the game. Stanford finally tied the set when Erin Waller pounded down an overpass at 20-20 and took its first lead at 22-21, when Barboza served her first of two aces. After the senior?s second ace gave the team a 23-21 lead, Cal Poly took a timeout. Ali Waller came up with three kills out of the break, and sealed the win at 25-23. Stanford hit .300 in the set, but the five aces allowed the Mustangs and their .235 clip to prevail.

Stanford pulled out to a small lead in the third set , with two Lichtman kills pacing the initial Cardinal effort. After a pair of blocks by Akinradewo, Stanford had a 13-9 lead, but three consecutive Mustang points allowed the home team back within striking distance, 13-12. From that point, a virtual back-and-forth ensued, with Cal Poly taking its last lead at 21-20. A Barboza kill and a Mustang hitting error reversed the advantage, and after one chance at set point at 24-23, Klineman slammed back-to-back kills on the Cardinal?s second shot to win, 26-24.

Stanford had had enough of close calls, and came out to hit .550 and dominate the fourth set. Two Stanford blocks and more Cal Poly hitting woes all the Cardinal to race out to a 9-3 lead, and, after three consecutive Barboza kills and a Barboza-Waller block, the Cardinal?s lead was 13-4. Barboza never let down, ripping another pair of kills in the three-point surge that pushed Stanford to its first double-digit lead, 18-7. A Cal Poly service error a few points later began the 6-1 Stanford surge down the final stretch, and fittingly, Barboza ended things with a roll shot at 25-10. The Mustangs had just eight kills in the fourth set and hit -.030, while Barboza alone had six kills in the set and hit .857.

Stanford begins the Pac-10 season on Friday, taking on Oregon State in Maples Pavilion at 7 p.m. The Cardinal continues conference action on Saturday against No. 12 Oregon, also at 7 p.m.

September 20, 2008May-Treanor, Walsh extend run Top seeds win in Manhattan Beach for fourth straight timeBy Lara Boyko/Special to AVP.com

MANHATTAN
BEACH Calif. — Back in April ago when the 2008 AVP season started in
Miami, Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor started out their historic
year with a three-set win over Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh. Six
months later they finished the season by ending their historic year in
a historic location with a two set victory over No. 4 seed Jennifer
Boss and April Ross 21-18 and 21-16. “This is a huge tournament
and it’s been such an amazing season, but after losing the two
tournaments after the Olympics kind of took the wind out of our sails,”
said Walsh. “We worked so hard and were on such a high, plus we don’t
like losing. It’s fun to get it now.” Not wanting to see a
repeat of their early morning loss to Boss and Ross, Walsh and
May-Treanor came out for the final match with more intensity and fire
to play. After breaking a 7-7 tie in set one, Walsh and May-Treanor
turned on the heat with a 7-2 run to give them their biggest lead of
the set at 14-9. Boss and Ross fought back and gave the
Olympic gold medalists a run for their money during a gritty rally at
13-17. Despite Boss and Ross coming out on the positive side of that
rally by getting the point, Walsh and May-Treanor turned up the heat a
notch to win the set 21-18. “I think the difference was in the
four aces in the whole match and I think we both sided-out in the high
600s,” said Walsh of the difference between their first and second
meeting of the day with Boss and Ross. “There were a couple of aces in
there and a couple of balls we did not transition. There were so many
opportunities. I wanted redemption against them so bad that I was glad
that they beat Elaine and Nicole so we could meet them in the final.”
Set two was similar where after Walsh and May-Treanor broke through a
2-2 tie, they kept building a lead that was too much for Boss and Ross
to overcome and resulted in a 21-16 match win. “Kerri and
Misty played better than they did this morning,” said Boss. “When that
teams plays well it is tough to beat them and we didn’t play as well,
which is a combination that messed us up. We served well, but I think
they stepped up their hitting and when they are hitting, they are a
tough team to beat.” “We stayed the same as we as aggressive
as we always are, played with focus and determination, but they
increased their determination and fire,” said Ross. Today’s
win earns Walsh and May-Treanor another plaque on the Manhattan Beach
Pier Walk of Fame, the distinction of being the first women’s team to
win the Manhattan Beach Open four consecutive years and they will split
the largest domestic tournament paycheck. Second place many not be
ideal, but for Boss and Ross they finish the season with splitting a
$75,000 paycheck to split and feeling good about where the future is
taking them. “It has been an amazing year,” said Boss. “April
and I are so proud of where we have come from together and our goal was
to win this by peaking for this point and we did. Unfortunately we just
didn’t win in the final. We beat Kerri and Misty this morning, Elaine
and Nicole in the semifinals, so I am so proud of both of us. Hopefully
one of us will win it in Glendale next weekend.” Just as Boss
and Ross have had their own amazing year, so have Walsh and May-Treanor
in 2008. From earning a second consecutive Olympic gold medal to seeing
112 consecutive match victories and 19 consecutive titles, the time has
come for one of the most prolific teams in beach volleyball history to
take a break. From Walsh heading to next week’s Glendale Open
to try to become the Best of the Beach to May-Treanor starting
competition on Dancing with the Stars, these two are ready to start the
next chapters of their lives. “I am happy and feel like now
the fun can begin,” said Walsh. “I looked at Misty after the last point
and wanted to cry. I may go home tonight and cry. When you think about
all the things we have done and how much I love her, who knows? It has
been so amazing.” —

Day One is Done!
First day of Main Draw Play Ends With Surprises
By Lara Boyko/Special to AVP.com

MANHATTAN
BEACH, Calif. — With anything possible, especially during the last tournament
of the season, at the end of the first day of main draw action at the Manhattan
Beach Open some top seeds advanced while others found themselves in an
unfamiliar situation — going home early.
In the women’s bracket seeds one through four advanced to play tomorrow, but
it was a late day loss of No. 5 seed Angie Akers and Holly McPeak to No. 10 seed
Lauren Fendrick and Paula Roca (21-91 and 26-24) and No. 6 seed of Carrie Dodd
and Tatiana Minello losing to No. 9 seed of Jenny Kropp and Nancy Mason (21-16
and 21-14) that ended the season for two more teams today.
With the upsets taking place, teams quickly recognized that they had to be on
their toes even during a late afternoon match.
“We’ve got some upsets going on and we could have looked at our last opponent
and thought we were going to walk all over them,” said Dianne DeNecochea. “We
started this game knowing we were going to have to play our best game. They
played great so it doesn’t matter who is over there as you have to play well to
win.”
Other teams on the women’s side that are continuing on to the last day of the
women’s main draw include No. 8 DeNecochea and Barbra Fontana who defeated No.
14 Jenny Pavlik and Stacy Rouwenhorst in a gritty three set match. The last of
the women’s teams to advance to tomorrow’s play was the sister team of No. 12
Katie and Tracy Lindquist after the No. 7 seed of Tyra Turner and Rachel
Wacholder forfeited.
Although this is the last regular tournament of the season, many teams found
themselves going back to basics in order to get the win.
“From a physical standpoint we are making sure we are eating a lot and
hydrating,” said DeNocochea. “We are also trying to talk more during the rallies
along with going back to the fundamentals. It’s so important to focus on all of
these basics today just like we did in February.”
In the men’s bracket seeds one through seven, seeds nine through 15 and seeds
18 and 23 advancing advanced to tomorrow’s play. The biggest of the upsets on
the men’s side came in another late afternoon match as No. 10 Ryan Mariano and
Ed Ratledge outlasted the No. 8 seed of Pedro Brazao and Jose Loila 18-21, 21-17
and 17-15.
Just as on the women’s side, teams on the men’s side had to fight through
both mental and element obstacles to play another day.
“As the wind died down towards the end of the day, I stopped jump serving to
make sure we could move our opponents around and it worked well for us,” said
Mariano.
With main draw competition starting at 8 am tomorrow, teams will look to find
a little bit more in themselves and their game as the season comes to an end.
“We all prepare the same throughout the season, but mentally it is a little
bit tougher, but you need to prepare the same,” said Mariano. “This is the
Wimbledon of volleyball and you always want to play here.”—
